HAPPY EARTH DAY!
Monday, April 22nd is a special day for oh so many reasons. Christians celebrate Easter Monday, Jews celebrate the continuation of Passover and the world takes a day to give thanks to Mother Earth for y’know, giving us a beautiful home full of luscious green meadows, sprawling golden deserts, skies of blue and oceans ranging from turquoise to deep azure.
She is pretty incredible, our Mama Earth. And like with any mother-child relationship there comes a time when the tables turn and the child has to care for the parent. You may have heard the devastating statistic that we have 12 years to stop the planet warming above 1.5ºC. It’s time to stop frowning, sighing and shaking our heads. It’s time for drastic and fast change.
It can feel overwhelming, but we can all make adjustments in our own lives to help, even if it’s just to feel like we’re doing our part. This weekend as we gather round the table with friends and family we can buy local produce, we can bring that insulated travel mug that’s collecting dust in our cupboards to the coffee shop, we can take reusable bags and skip the plastic bags at the grocery store and we can buy wine that is made in earth-friendly practices.
I wrote an article on this topic for the Spring edition of Grapevine Magazine (you’ll have to scroll to page 56!) where I briefly describe organic, sustainable, biodynamic and vegan winemaking styles—all of which are easy on the earth in various ways.
I did, however, neglect to mention Kosher wine which is often vegan by definition as Kosher laws prohibit the use of any animal by-products in the production of wine. I wanted to mention that here for anyone who may be a guest at a Passover dinner this week!
If you’re in Toronto I’d love you to join myself and Jennifer Huether, Canada’s FIRST female Master Sommelier, for an evening of vegan food & wine pairings on Friday, April 26th. We’ll be guiding you through 6 courses expertly paired with wines by Jennifer and with a special ‘welcome wine’ by Karlo Estates, the FIRST vegan-certified vegan winery in North America. We’re going to have such a great night! Click here for event info and tickets.
Hope you’ll enjoy the article and have a happy holiday sharing laughter, great food and great wine.
